I really got along well with him and he was a really good friend to me. He showed me a lot about how a missionary should be and how to teach. So this whole week were getting things already for him to go, i was trying to not think to much what it will be like one year from now haha. We went on a trip with the branch on Friday that was really cool but its about an hour away and one of the members brought there dog, the road is really bad and we were all car sick and it got even worse when the dog threw up haha. Then we got to the place pibuls which was really pretty only problema was that it was raining the whole time haha.

Heres my funny story this week about the crazy people in chachas this week, we were knocking doors this week, an old lady let us enter, they said they were just finishing up a chapter of the bible. We started to teach them and we soon realized that they are more catholic than the pope. We started to share scriptures with them, we asked them if they could read a scripture and they said sorry we can’t read, haha alright so we read the scripture to them. I looked over at the lady and she had the bible upside down in her lap haha. Just anther example of crazy people. They believe in the bible here, that theres power in a open bible that sits on your table but they don’t even read it or know whats in it….. MY new comp is going to arrive tomorrow, hes Elder Nicaragua from Nicaragua haha, hopefully we’ll make a great team. Paz fuera E Culp

So this week we got rained on almost everyday, more doors shut in our face and two bapitsms to finish it off yesterday. The weather was so crazy this week, the climate is bi-polar here, its raining one minute and the sun is shining the next minute. We had a slow start to the week, we were both sick but got better and finished off strong. We had a really cool baptism yesterday in a river, we rented a bus and all the members hoped and we drove half an hour to a river. The water was so cold, i thought i saw i peace of ice floating past me when i got in the water haha, it was by far the coldest baptism i've had in the mission. We baptized melissa and talia, it was one of the cooler baptisms in my mission. So we're teaching other people that could be baptized too but i dunno theres something about the people here that is way different and a lot harder than in other areas.

my comp elder caballero, hes from lima and hes going to go home in about 25 days and we're working hard trying hard not to be trunky. Hes way cool hes a super hard worker and i can say that for the first time in my mission i'm really giving it my all, thanks to him i'm always tired haha. Last week after we went to internet we called a taxi, my comp got in and was just reaching to shut his door, i had just opened mine when the driver stepped on the gas. I dived in head first, while my door was still open, meanwhile the door hit a wheelbarrel way hard, here the wheel barrels are completly made out of metal, so now the taxi diver has a huge dent in his door with a nice sized hole too. The whole thing was pretty fun in how it happened, maybe you'd have to be there to see it, but stuff like this only happens in peru haha. And yesterday a drunk guy was following us, we stopped to knock a door, he stopped too and started to punch a power pole while we were knocking. my comp told him to give it to him good, so he started to punch it harder, then he started to say that it hurts. But he kept on punching it haha, nobody was there so we left, but the drunk guy stayed there, punching the pole haha.

Feliz Cumpleaños

Sunday was crazy, we had a bunch of stuff planned out for the big day. it really wasn't crazy because it was my bday but for the mission obra. We went to the bishops house in the morning to eat breakfast which was really cool(we're going later tonight to eat cuy!) then we went to bring a bunch of people to chruch, i gave a huge talk in sac. meeting, then after chruch we went to leave. My comp and Hna. Amelia smashed eggs on my head. So that was something new, its the peruvian tradition here for bdays... and they made an awesome cake for me(well one of the five cakes) they told me to lick it to see if it tastes good, then they shoved my face into it, which is a peruvian tradition too. We went to eat with the members for lunch, they gave me a cake (number 3) and then we went to go teach famila campos. We got there with the zone leaders, they had cake too. What happened with them, the parents lost intrest, and we've taughten lec. 3 three times, we've taughten faith and repentance 3x but never have been able to challenge for baptism. So the zls taught everything and challenged the parents to baptism and they said they didn't want it but didn’t challenge maria. Then they started talking about the ressurection, death and all that, i was listening to it all, i felt really strongly that we had to challenge maria the daughter. I was sitting there listening to them talk and i started to feel that so strongly like i was going to burn up inside if i didn't open my mouth and say it. The conversation died down, and the zls looked to me and my comp and i started to talk for the first time. I don't really remember what i said or how i said it but i challenged maria for baptism, i said it and she accepted it, shes going to be baptized sat. I felt so good to get that out of me. Man i felt so guided by the spirit but i felt like it was going to kill me if i didn't follow through it. We have spent to so much time on this family and its been so hard to get here. I’ve really struggled to teach here in the mission more than everything, its been hard for me. I felt like I was doing something wrong, and didn’t know what but I did everything yesterday. That was by far the best part of my bday. we got out of there and i felt like a million bucks, then we went to the pension for my bday party, which topped it off.

Hey so i don't have a ton of stuff to write about this week but i thought you might like this picture. I dunno really how to explain it, but it wasn't my favorite haha. Nothing was wrong really, i think i work myself up a bit to much, this week was the last week of changes here and i really didn't want to leave here. I'm pretty attached to the area, members and have high hopes for some people we're teaching. I've been here for 4 1/2 months and the thought of leaving here was killing me. My time here has changed me, my attitude and basically my mission. So changes came today and i'll be staying here for anther 6 weeks! I was pumped to hear that and mad i was all stressed out over nothing haha. So basically the whole week was stressfull, pretty much a week long farewell for nothing. But something really sweet happened last night that made it an awesome week too.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

We're teaching a family, a dad and mom and 3 kids. The two youngest kids Maria (20) and Joel (16) have gone to church last week and went yesterday too. They are way excited about everything, maria takes notes on everything and then comes and shares it with her parents. For example yesterday she pulled out her notes and told her mom the july 28 we have to go clean the church and august 18 we are all going to go to the temple (she has no idea what the temple is haha) So last night we had a family home evening with them. I had the lesson and was teaching but the mom kept on interrupting me and talking for 10-15 minutes before stopping for air. She wasn't trying to be rude but thats just how she is haha . So it was almost 930 so we just didn't finish the lesson because we had to go. I was a little upset cuz i only got half way through the lesson, but yeah whatever. We finished with a prayer and they brought out some food to eat. Just then there oldest son came home from work, the oldest son is a clown and he was still in costume and everything. So he had everyone of us come up and sit in front of everyone and asked us questions and pretty much burned us, it was so funny. Then after that the mom came out of the kitchen crying. She said she heard that we had changes tomorrow and that she said she didn't want us to go, she said thanks for the change she's seen in her kids and that she'd remember us. It super awesome and we all felt the spirit, it was one of those moments when you know what your doing is right and theres nothing like this. Then it turns out we don't have changes, we're still here. We are so going to baptize this family.

We had a great week here in polmalca, we finally got some baptisms and all the work is starting to pay off, it doesn't stop with baptisms. The members are awesome, giving us a ton of support, references and food. We have some great new people to teach this week and hopefully we can get some more people in the water before changes next tuesday. I'm really attached to this area and think i can do a ton of good here, hopefully i won't go but i've been here for 4 1/2 months i'll probably go. This area really helped me out a ton and i learned a ton about everything life, missionary work and myself. This week i had a sweet experience with fasting which i'd love to share but i don't have anymore time in internet. But'll i'll say this its legit and it works. If your working hard and your almost there with your goal but your not quite there yet. Maybe you should fast, its sweet the lord has a ton of blessings for us if you just make the sacrafice. I'm still here in my area with my comp. I'm excited for more time here to learn the language and work here. I've been sick the whole week with a soar throat, and head aches but it hasn't been to bad and i think i'm doing better especailly after a good pday

So this week for the first time i ate the famous Cuy here in Peru, my whole mision about how tastey cuy is. But what is Cuy? Its pretty much a hamster, there just bigger down here. People have little hamster farms in there houses and when they get fat enough they are ready to eat. So i eat my first cuy with my bishop for his bday this week. I was worried about how it would taste but it turned out pretty good. I took a picture with my pic of wade so he can see that i'm eating his hamsters brother down here haha. For americans steak is good meat and for peruvians its got to be the cuy.

I also ate this week goat, which can only be described as jerky, i didn't really care for that.

This week was pretty nuts. I think wed or tues we had an earthquake at 11 in the night. I was lying on the top bed of our bunk bed with the pillow on top of my face because my comp was in the bathroom with all the lights on. When the bed started to shake back and forth for about 15 seconds, right when it stopped i looked down to see what my comp was doing. The bed shaking is normal because its about to fall apart, but for 15 seconds no. I thought my comp was being stupid or pulling a prank but he was still in the bathroom. So yeah turns out it was an earthquake. We went to look outside afterwards in the street and all the people were in the streets, it was cool... They say that earthquake was 4.0 and then later that night at 1 am there was anther one that measured in at 6.0 but i didn't know about that one until the next day. I must have been really tired, lucky i didn't fall out of bed haha. Then in the morning a bought a sweet newspaper to send home for you guys.

On thursday in the news it said that an elder in lima had been stabbed to death. All the members went crazy making up stories up about how he died defending a sister missionary. I was kind of nervous too because i know a lot of elders in lima, i wanted to know who it was and why. Turns out he was returned missionary that was doing his hometeaching, her husband was drunk and thought that his wife was cheating on him and went nuts. Thats the other news for the week.

This week was kind of crappy in the missionary sense of things, we left a lot of people that wouldn't progress, pray, get married or baptized. That stinks. it feels like a lot of work for nothing when you leave someone but hopefully they can change later. We have some new people to teach which always makes things better. We're teaching a body builder who has the only gym in the town, so yeah hes pretty famous haha. He's cool, really humble and leaving behind a lot for the gospel because he knows the change is worth it.

Hey if you got time send me a letter, i'm starting to get a little lonely down here and would love to hear from you guys

elder culp

6 months!!!! The movies were pretty cool but pretty bad too, I'm pretty sure Satan has a tricky plan, the one time the whole year that they put movies about christ on tv it happens during conference because nobody assisted the conference saturday and a in the afternoon on sunday. It was weird to watch conference down here without the family but cool too a lot of speakers can speak spanish so they pre record their talks and do it in spanish that was pretty cool. This conference i learned a lot and sure appreciated their words of wisdom.

This week i got really sick for a day with something bad in my stomach, my comp says it was a popsicle i ate haha but i think it was the chicken haha. That day we stayed in the room, the next day we spent the whole day putting up a new roof and then we had conference, we didn't do anything as far as work is concerned but the week was fun. Then today we walked 4 miles to some small mountains called the Dos Tetas haha, we climbed them, destroyed some cactus with rocks, wrote our names on a rock with red fingernail polish which looked like blood and pushed a huge rock off the edge of the hill haha. then we hitch hiked back to the room, it was awesome but I'm burnt again, this always happens every p-day haha

3.22.10

I was hoping that chiclayo would be a lot cooler but for some reason its feels so much hotter, it gets cooler at night but you can't be outside because of all the mosquitos here. We live in a tiny room, my feet touch the wall and have less than an inch of space before my head hits the wall when i go to sleep at night, we don't have any windows and it gets really hot at night but the cool thing is that we have running water for the first time in the mission. My comp De La Cruz is from madre de dios peru and reminds me of a mix of a chinese person and peruvian sometimes haha, he’s a different guy but he's still a good guy too. Hopefully the work will pick up this week cuz we have no investigators right now!

love elder culp

3.15.10

So we have changes in the mission, i'm going to chiclayo and my comp is going to piura, the cool thing is i'm going to my comps first area. I haven't met my new comp yet but i know that his name is Elder De la Cruz thats all i freaking nervous to meet this guy. I'm going to be speaking a lot of spanish this week and my brain is going to be fried when i write my next email a week from now. We went and said good bye yesterday, that was so hard, i had to say goodbye to everyone that i know here in peru. Next week i'm going to be homesick for the utah and homesick for talara, this is so hard i don't want to leave. This week we hung out with gustavo everyday to keep gustavo animated for baptism and we baptized him on saturday, it was perfect, it was one of the baptisms that you hear about that were really spiritual. Gustavo bore his testimony afterwards and was crying and then got hugs from everyone there, and it was cool to see how everyone there he had only knew for a couple weeks but they loved him and his life had changed because of that. Afterwards walking back to our room i felt so good inside, true peace inside for the first time, my eyes opened a bit and now i know a little more about life. I can't describe how good i felt and still feel haha, its awesome. Afterwards we went to the beach played soccer, ate food and watched the sunset. Perfect day.

3.8.10

hey heres an update for the week, nothing super sweet happened, we baptized kenny which was actually cool come to think of it. She had to have anther baptismal interview with pres chippman and she passed so we asked if she wanted to be baptized right now and she said sure so we went to the church. Called a member from the ward, he came (looked like he just came from the beach) and with 4 people, me, my comp, the member and kenny we baptized her. She didn't want pics at all, which was awesome. The hole thing took 20 minutes it was awesome and super low key. Gustavo is set for next week hes ready for the baptism on saturday and he even talked to prez chippman for a minute or two on sunday about going on a mission. Gustavo is ready for everything he just has a fear to mess up after his baptism. But we took care of it and it'll be cool to baptize him because we started teaching him in january and now we'll baptize him 2 1/2 months later. Changes are next week, i don't know if i'm ready for change or want it but it'll be interesting to see what goes down sunday.

3.1.10

This week we were in sullana monday and tuesday for meetings, wednesday we did service all day and didn't get to go out teaching, Thursday my comp went to mira mar and i stayed with elder montes, for 4 baptismal interviews, 3 passed but kenny failed she has to visit with pres. Friday came and we had a birthday party for a member and we made tacos and cleaned her house. Then afterwards for the first time for the whole week we went out prosalitiyng at 4 p.m. on friday, we went and visited a really cool guy named iban, he was really cool and gave us a huge 3 liter coke and a bunch of food, we taught him a little but some people came in during the lesson and gave him a turkey, then before we left he said something like if you guys need anything at all my door is open and if anyone bothers you, you come to me and i'll take care of it. So we left and didn't think much of it then on saturday morning the we saw some members and they asked us if we were teaching a guy named iban and we were like yeah, and they said their friends (the ones with the turkey) told them that we were teaching him. Well to make a long story short, turns out he’s like the mob boss for talara. Turns out he’s like a vigilante, like batman. But he has killed a lot of people so we won't get to baptize him but he’s pretty cool, hopefully we can get a pic with him this week.

As for baptisms we had 4 set for saturday, one fell through with kenny because she failed her interview, carol and haiti passed and gustavo bailed on us the day of the baptism at 7 in the morning, hopefully we can fix some things with him. But we went ahead and baptized carol and haiti but we sure missed not having gustavo there he’s like the coolest person we've met yet

well thats all for now

2.22.10

This week was so hot, every day had to be at least 105, this is the hottest time of the year in peru. We spent all day wednesday doing service, first we fixed the holes in someone’s roof in the morning and then in the after noon we went and painted a members house and her roof had problems. All the water would pool up and drain into her small house so we took off her roof and raised up one wall and put the roof back on. That was a fun day, especially because we didn't have to put on a tie. We are teaching some triplets right now (me and them have the same b day) and they introduced us to their aunt and cousin and they are way cooler then they are. They asked what church was like and if they could go on sunday which was amazing. Their names are Olga and Haiti so we are excited to teach them. Next week we should baptize Gustavo, who we've been teaching since christmas and we are way pumped to baptize him after all the teaching. He’s 22 and wants to serve a mission in a year too. Carol 15 who is cool too and then there’s Kenny, who is a single mother of a child from the "other side" hahaha, sometimes we have to leave because he’s to annoying, every time he sees us he says Mormons and makes the slitting your throat motion and this kids is only 4 years old haha. We got her off alcohol and tea, now we got the baptismal date and we went to talk to her yesterday and she got a nose ring. We flipped because it was ugly and she wants to get more too and a tattoo. I don't know what we're going to do with her, we have to give her a Come to Jesus talk this week and straighten her out if we want to baptize her. So we got our hands full for now, wells thats all for now folks

2.15.10

This week was different, we had a late start on it because we went to sullana for monday and tuesday and had a multi zone conference with the president and his wife, that was cool but took a ton of time and almost all our pday! Then wednesday me and my comp spilt up to baptize people in different cities! My comp went to Mira Mar and baptized two kids in the river and i stayed here in talara to baptize victoria moran. Victoria comes from a part member family that was less active but me and comp had been visiting them since my first week in december trying to activate them with no success. Then two weeks ago the mom and her daughter came, then that night we visited her and they told us victoria wanted to be baptized and we had no idea she wasn't a member so yeah that was cool and a reward for our diligence.

The rest of the week was hard, we had to find new investigators and had now success at all! This was frustrating because we have a goal for 20 baptisms by march 14 and we only have 5, the goal is crazy but so are we. So pray for us and we'll see what the lord wants to happen.

2.8.10

I'm doing good today, as always on the p days, today we aren't doing anything for pday, we had a really big week and are really tired. But have an even bigger one coming up haha. Saturday we met with the pres. and sis chippman, that was cool and we're about to leave for sullana for anther zone conf with them. This week was crazy because it was like 105 friday, so freaking hot and then on saturday it rained for like 12 hrs straight and all the roads were underwater, so we went out prosaliting in our sandals and then the power company turned off the power so nobody would die with all the water that was running into three houses. We didn't have power for a couple days and sunday was fast and testimony meeting, i shared my testimony but there wasn't a microphone so i was half yelling. Then we baptized bryan and angie after wards. That was cool but i messed up on the baptismal prayer 5 times with angie and then she slipped when she was coming up out of the water haha still learning a lot, but bryan was perfect. Then after church we changed closes and went around and helped people put up there roofs up after the rainstorm and get ready for what’s about to come. We have a baptism wednesday in mira mar and in here in talara too and about 5 roofs to fix this week so we'll be busy

elder culp

2.1.10

This week was a roller coaster, It started of really good when we went up to a place called El Alto which is 15 minutes south of mancora, which is the cancun of peru, because we had a reference from missionaries, that a nurse that is living that heard about the church and was really interested. We went up met her, taught 1st, 2nd, third lessons, word of wisdom, tithing, chastity and prayer in 3 hours and committed her to baptism. She was supposed to come down sunday and be baptized but because of her work she couldn't make the trip, it was really cool because of other missionaries and the lord she was already prepared and we just had to ask her to get baptized. The hard part of the week was when president told me i was going to go to tambo grande, a small farming village because he needed to send my comp to chichalyo. I wasn`t down with that at all because i love the area I'm in and me and my trainer just starting to be effect. So i told him i didn't want to go and begged him for anther change. He said he'd think about it and call back sunday so for 2 days we were stressed out and he called back and said it would be fine if we stayed here. I don't think i scored any points with the pres. haha but life is good now. Today we went to this beach, negritos where there are some awesome caves and some crazy religion that worships in this one cave. We went to go take a picture but this crazy fat guy chased us away with a stick.

1.25.10

This week was pretty crazy. We had a rough start to the week because we went to a small farming community a couple hours out of talara, called mira mar. Its like a 1hr car ride but it takes about 2 hours because the roads are covered with sand. Mira Mar was really cool because its straight up farming there. There probably is more donkeys than people there. We talked with a bunch of people that could be baptized but there’s only like 10 members there so its going to be really hard to teach and start up the church over there with out a lot of help from the members. We had some meeting until 9Ñ30 and i was way pumped to go home after a long day but found out we couldn`'t because the cars stop coming at 7 and so me and my comp had to stay the night in a members house and sleep together in the same bed, which really sucked. Then we had to wake up at 5 to go back to talara. The ride back sucked and the rest of our day did too, we were so tired and it made the rest of the week really hard to catch up because we didn`t talk with anybody until thursday afternoon, because we had p day monday, meetings in sullana and went to mira mar.

But yesterday day was sweet, which fixed the crapy week we had. I got my first baptism. We baptized Claudia and i got to do the baptism. It was a train wreck for the most part, but it was awesome too. It was way tight because We never did get her dad`s permission to baptize her, but we asked her if her dad would throw her out of her house and she said no. So we said you wanna go for it and she was like yeah of course. And as far as i know her dad has no clue what happened. But yeah, she was way pumped after the baptism and super happy to finally get baptized.

Its taken three months to experience this and it's been worth the wait to be a part of something like this. All the learning spanish, home sickness and culture shock, started to go away just a bit and a desire to work harder has started to grow. So yeah, it just feels good to have some success and watch somebody grow closer to the savior and feel his love for us.

1.18.10

This week was pretty awesome we had a ton of success and a big pay day for a

ll our work. We met some really cool people and committed 8 people to baptism. Sunday was sweet we had 11 investigators come to church and 8 come to

a baptism after church. A couple people got really excited about baptism and all their fears they had before left and now there ready to get baptized

and give up some things of the world they were having a hard time to get rid of. Next week we could baptize claudia if her dad gives permission and belce if she is in town. Then the next week we could baptize Juan (17) and his mom.

This other family who is really cool but has some issues that we think they

have but we aren`t positive so who knows what will happen with them. Kenny

(22) single mother, Carol(14) and Catey (18) all girls. Then we have Gustavo who doesn`t have a date yet but is way cool. He is definitely one of those people who have been prepared. He’s had a lot of experiences with bad things but never been addicted to drugs and alcohol. And was like i totally agree with the word of wisdom when we taught him about that. Last night we taught him the plan of salvation and he pretty much bore his testimony to us about the church with out even knowing it. Then in church he was telling us that he felt a peace that he'd been searching for and that he knows the church is true. So hopefully he`ll get baptized and even go on mission. We also have anther guy who has been trying to bring the church down for a while, kind of like alma but is starting to listen to us and read the bom. I didn`t think to much about teaching him and that we would go very far with him because he was so bitter. But the next day at church (he’s a chain smoker and heavy drinker by the way) said that he went to light up his first cigarette and choked on it and didn`t have a desire to smoke after that or today (sunday). So hopefully we can help him change and become a happy person again but who knows what will happen. If i have time time next week i’ll write about how we went to a house and cast out evil spirits and witch

craft and what not hahaha. (we actually did do it but i don`t think it was

all to real)

1.11.10

This week was really long and had some ups and downs. It was hard because we had p day monday and went to sullana because we had a zone conference there the next day so we stayed the night. So we didn`t really even start our week and untill wednesday and then on thursday we had a huge planning session for a Gran Noche de Cine where we`re going to watch the joseph smith movie and we are also planning on making our rama or branch into a ward because we got a 180 people out to church on sunday. Sunday was the highlight of the week because we got had 6 investigators come out to church. Carlos and his family, Claudia, Gustavo and 2 snakes haha. We were going to challenge Carlos to baptism because this is his 3rd week going to church and he knows the B.O.M. is true but when we did he said he wasn`t married and then we asked if he was planning on getting married and he said yeah but not with my girlfriend. This ticked me off cuz he has kids and thought what he was doing was cool. So were going to work that out. Gustavo is really cool he came to church pretty much without us doing anything and gave me a 2 ties and my comp a pair of nice shoes. That makes 5 pairs of shoes my comp has been given in three weeks. He wears some ugly shoes that look really old but aren`t and people think hes poor so members keep giving him shoes haha. And last but not least Claudia, she is solid and ready for baptism but her dad won`t give her permission so we`re fasting for her thursday and we have a baptismal date on the 23rd for her and anther girl so we`re hoping everything works out.

Last night we saw a moto taxi do a front flip when the front wheel hit a soccer ball. Nobody was seriously hurt but a big fight started to break out when nobody would pay for the damage so we got the heck out of there. That was pretty sweet though. And today for pday we went to a beach about 30 minutes away called negritos it was sweet but sucked cuz we couldn`t swim and we just got sun burnt. Well thats about all for now hopefully i have some more good news next week
